Jess and Lance - The beginning

“Hey, !@#$!” Jess groaned softly when he heard the words shouted at him. He had just barely reached the edge of school grounds when Ryan’s voice stopped him. With a sigh, he slowly turned to face Ryan and his buddies, a grimace on his face.

“Come on Ryan, lets not do this today. I just want to get home before it starts to rain.” Jess said, gripping the strap of his back pack with one hand. He wanted to run off, just get away from them all, but he knew he’d make it worse on himself if he did. They were athletes, he was just an awkward kid with no friends; they could easily outrun him if they wanted to.

However, Ryan just laughed and grabbed Jess by the front of his shirt, tugging him close with a vile smirk. “Now, where’s the fun in that, huh, fag?” He practically purred before viciously punching Jess in the stomach. Jess sucked in a sharp breath and coughed, trying to pull himself away from Ryan. “You deserve this and you know it.”

He didn’t, but that was not the point. Ryan wanted to make Jess suffer, Jess was an outlier, outside the norm. Not only did Jess keep his hair long, but he was born with heterochromia, with one eye being green and the other brown, and it was openly known that he was gay. Of course, that disclosure was put out by Ryan himself, way before he was ready to tell anyone that fact. On top of that, Jess never had any luck making friends in school, awkward and introverted as he was, and whenever someone wanted to talk to him it was usually about his eyes.

“Please just leave me alone…” Jess all but begged, but that earned him a punch to the face from Ryan, who laughed with his friends when Jess gave a cry of pain. That was definitely going to bruise, and quickly.

“You’re a pathetic piece of trash, Jess, and trash like you gets thrown out.” Ryan said, his smirk widening as he noticed they were near one of those large metal trash bins. He dragged Jess over to it and slammed the smaller against the harsh metal, making Jess wince. Another part of his body that was going to bruise, great.

“Come on, please Ryan, don’t.” Jess begged, knowing what the other was planning on doing, planning on throwing him into the bin. “Please just, just let me be.”

“Hmm, nah. You deserve this, you little fag.” Ryan practically purred, then lifted Jess and slammed him into the bin before slamming the lid to it shut while he and his friends laughed. Jess gagged at the smell in the bin, wanting to just jump out, but waiting for the others to leave before doing so.

“Hey man, maybe you should join basketball with how you just dunked him.” One of Ryan’s buddies laughed as they began to walk away.

“Or maybe make this into its own sport.” Another countered, and they erupted in laughter again. Jess sighed as their footsteps finally faded away, and he slowly pulled himself out of the trash bin, wiping away grime and debris that clung to his clothes and person.

Jess grimaced and adjusted his glasses, knowing he definitely would need a hot shower when he got home, and probably give his glasses and clothes a good cleaning. He wasn’t surprised, not really. He’d been getting used to Ryan’s abuse since they started high school, and he was just glad he was finally in his senior year and soon he wouldn’t ever have to worry about Ryan again.

With a sigh Jess gathered his fallen bag and began to head home, lightly tapping his cheek where the bruise was going and wincing at the pain that caused. That was definitely going to be there for at least a week, and he dreaded the looks he was going to get at school over it. He was sure everyone would know by tomorrow what Ryan had done, and he was not looking forward to the whispers he would hear the next day at school.

“!@#$, man, watch out!” A voice shouted right before Jess was suddenly knocked to the ground, glasses once again askew. “!@#$, !@#$, you alright? Did I do that?” Owlish brown eyes blinked down at him, scanning across his bruising flesh, and the stranger blanched, prodding around Jess’ cheek for a moment, to which Jess winced slightly at. “Put some ice on that. Really sorry, man,” he added, hopping up and grabbing Jess’ arm to yank him to his feet, lopsided smile spread across his face. There was another shout, farther away, and he danced from foot to foot. “Again, sorry!” He exclaimed, taking off, a police officer dashing by only seconds later in pursuit of whoever had just bowled Jess over.

“!@#$ delinquent!” The cop shouted. There was a fading, amused laugh, the sound of hurried footsteps, and then peaceful quiet once more.

Jess fixed his glasses as he watched the strange guy go, getting chased away by the cop. He couldn’t help but think of that lopsided smile as he rubbed absentmindedly at his bruised cheek. “He is right; I need to get ice on this.” He said softly to himself, glancing once more in the direction of where the other man had been chased off to before returning on his way to going home.

The walk home was long, but once he walked in the door of the apartment he and his mother shared, he let out a soft sigh of relief. His mother was off at the café she worked at during the evenings and would not be returning home until well after midnight. Jess sighed softly to himself as he set down his bag and took off his jacket, setting his jacket in front of the washing machine before heading to his room to change into a pair of loose fitting pajama pants. He tossed a clean towel over his shoulder and stepped back out of his room, depositing the clothes he had been wearing with his already discarded jacket.

Jess hummed softly to himself as he started up his shower, pulling off the pajama pants and setting them aside before hanging his towel on the wrack.

-------

Going through school the next day was difficult for Jess. The bruise was a darker shade of purple and blue than it had been the night before, and it stood out against his skin. He could hear people around him whispering and spreading rumors about what happened. He was glad that they could not see the bruise that had formed on his back where Ryan had slammed him against the trash bin the day before. He was having enough issues with just the bruise on his face. A few of his teachers tried asking him what had happened, to which he told them he tripped and ran into a door frame, but most teachers were used to Jess having some form of bruising; they knew it was not because Jess was clumsy, but Jess would not open up on what was actually causing the bruising. After years of Jess coming in with some form of bruising, most of the teachers stopped asking about what was happening. Some were concerned about Jess’s home life, others figured Jess was being bullied by someone in the school, and even a few just figured Jess was as clumsy as he said he was. Jess was just glad most of the teachers stopped asking what was going on in his life. He did not like that some thought it could be his mother who was doing that to him, but he really did not want anyone else getting involved in what Ryan and his buddies put him through, he did not want to think of what Ryan might do if he did tell someone what was actually happening.

When the bell finally rang for school to end, Jess was glad to finally be able to leave and not have to listen to the whispers of his classmates for longer then he needed. He rushed fairly quickly out of the classroom and to his locker, wanting to get what he needed and go. Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to be on the tables for him.

A hand was suddenly against Jess’s back, shoving him forward hard enough to have him knock into his locker. Another bruise to add to his list of bruises. The laugh that followed the painful shove let Jess know just who it was that did it, though he was not surprised at all.

“Hey fag, you didn’t tell anyone about yesterday, did you, huh?” Ryan asked with a snide grin. By now he knew Jess would not tell anyone.

Jess bit his lip as he turned and pressed himself against his locker so he was facing his bully. He had his eyes averted from Ryan’s and he wanted nothing more than to just run, but Ryan was blocking his way. “Of course not, Ryan.” He said softly, if only to save himself from getting punched if he did not say anything.

“Good. Cause if you do, and I get kicked from the wrestling team because of you, there will be hell to pay.” Ryan threatened, then shoved Jess once more against the lockers. “And if you think what I do now is bad, it will be so much worse if you go ratting away about this to anyone.”

"I won't tell anyone, I promise." Jess said, grimacing as Ryan shoved him hard against the locker again.

"Good." Ryan sneered, gripping the base of Jess's ponytail and giving it a sharp tug. "You're getting off easy today, fag, I've got other things to do, but tomorrows another day." He said with a smirk before jabbing a hand against Jess's bruised face, cause a whimper to escape Jess. Ryan laughed and pushed away. "Have fun now." He said with a smirk before walking off.

Jess sighed to himself once he was left alone, slowly gathering his things before leaving his locker behind. He rubbed at his bruising face a moment as he walked, glad at least he'd be left alone for the day. As he walked off the school property, he glanced at the trash with a grimace as he thought of the day before, but forced himself to keep walking, not wanting a repeat of the day before.

Lance was standing off on the other side of the street, keenly watching pedestrians to figure out who would be the best to pick pocket, when he spotted Jess. he grinned as he jogged over to the high schooler. "Hey! It's you again. How's your face?" He asked, gesturing to Jess' bruised cheek. "Let me buy you an ice cream to repay for !@#$ you up," he offered. "I'm Lance," he added as an after thought, linking his arm with Jess' before the other could give his answer and tugging him along.

Jess blinked in surprise as he was dragged along. "Oh! I'm Jess." He said, catching his footing so he wouldn't trip as Lance practically tugged him along. "Really, you don't need to worry about it. The bruise isn't from you or anything. I mean, it does hurt, but you running into me didn't cause the bruise." He said, lightly rubbing at the bruise on his face, a new one also adorning his face from Ryan knocking him into the lockers.

Lance glanced over Jess and frowned. "Well, then let me get you an ice cream to help with what seems to be a pretty shitty week. Either you had a very unpleasant run in with a wall, or some assholes just won't leave you be." Lance should have recognized the bruises as an act of intentional violence. After all, he was very familiar with being punched in the face.

"Any way, any good ice cream joints around here? I'm new to the town."

Jess couldn't help but smile a bit. Lance seemed like a pretty nice guy, and he definitely could use some ice cream. "There's a pretty good place a couple blocks away." He said, moving to take the lead in showing Lance where to go. "What brought you here, anyways? Yesterday you were being chased by a cop." He said, looking curiously at Lance.

Lance shrugged. "My family likes traveling. "We're just passing through for a week or two before we head up to Washington," he explained. "The cop thing was a misunderstanding. He was trying to give me a ticket for jaywalking, and, well, my parents would be pissed if I came home with a fine," he lied lightly. "Agin, really sorry about running you over."

"Oh, no need to be sorry." Jess said with a gentle smile as they reached the ice cream shop. Jess held the door open for Lance before stepping in. "It happens, and I'm all right, so really no need to apologize." He said as he looked at the different flavors of ice cream.

Lance grinned and nudged Jess with his shoulder. "If you say so. What're you going to get? I'm thinking praline," he hummed, asking for a few samples of different ice creams, settling on a scoop of praline and a scoop of cake batter.

"Mint tracks, I think." Jess said, and requested a single scoop of the mint tracks ona cake cone. "Thanks for this, by the way. You were right on about the fact that I'm having a shitty week." He said lightly as he was handed the cone. He had a lot of shitty weeks, but it was nice to have a treat during one. Usually his treat was the break of the weekend.
